IAVCEI/CEV Webinar: Phreatic and hydrothermal eruptions: Insights from fieldwork & lab experiments
Dear colleagues,
We are happy to introduce Cristian Montanaro, Ph.D. as our speaker for the next webinar! Please see the short abstract below and do not forget to register!
Phreatic and hydrothermal eruptions: Insights from fieldwork & lab experiments
Over the last decade, field investigations, laboratory experiments, geophysical exploration and petrological, geochemical and numerical modelling have provided insight into the mechanisms of phreatic and hydrothermal eruptions. These eruptions are driven by the sudden flashing of ground- or hydrothermal water to steam and are strongly influenced by the interaction of host rock and hydrothermal system. Aquifers hosted in volcanic edifices, calderas and rift environments can be primed for instability by alteration processes affecting rock permeability and/or strength. At the same time, magmatic fluid injection(s), earthquakes or other subtle triggers can promote explosive failure. Here we discuss the processes, characteristics, triggers and lithological factors influencing fragmentation and eruptive dynamics of phreatic and hydrothermal eruptions based on lessons learned from field and experimental studies of observed or past eruptions.
