The Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), with INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) and supported by IAVCEI, is pleased to announce the 2026 edition of the International School of Volcanology.
Location and Dates
The school will be held in Naples, Italy, at the headquarters of INGV – Osservatorio Vesuviano.
Activities will take place from October 22 to 27, 2026. Official activities will conclude on the evening of October 26. The dates have been selected to allow interested participants to extend their stay and participate in the workshop “Enduring the Unrest, Facing the Eruption” from 27 through 29 October, an event under the umbrella of the IAVCEI commission “Cities and Volcanoes”.
Scientific and Educational Objectives
The course aims to present the latest developments in volcanology applied to active volcanoes. The program will cover multiple aspects: from tephra studies to laboratory activities, from data acquisition and processing to the development of numerical models and reference eruption scenarios.
Volcanological studies and models will be integrated to define eruptive dynamics, quantify the impact of volcanic phenomena on the surrounding environment, and compile volcanic hazard maps, which are essential tools for risk zoning by Civil Protection authorities. The school’s theme is particularly relevant given the current evolution of Neapolitan volcanoes, with a special focus on the Campi Flegrei caldera.
