2nd Submarine Workshop
19-22 October 2026, Santorini (Greece) and virtual
Aims of the Workshop
Recent events, such as the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in 2022 and the Santorini volcano-tectonic crisis in 2025, have highlighted the urgent need for improved international coordination in the research and monitoring of submarine volcanoes. Advances in seafloor instrumentation, high-resolution imaging, and IODP drilling capabilities offer unparalleled opportunities to unravel the secrets of these underwater giants.
The 2nd edition of the Submarine Volcanism Workshop aims to connect researchers from volcanology, seismology, geodesy, and hazard studies, fostering international collaboration in the unique geological setting of Santorini.
Call for Abstracts & Registration
Due to the high expression of interest and limited venue capacity, the scientific committee will evaluate submissions based on abstract quality and thematic relevance. Priority will be given to Early Career Researchers (ECR).
Scientific Programme
We invite contributions that address the following core themes:
- Imaging the Deep: Multimethod imaging of magmatic systems, hydrothermal pathways, and the deep crustal architecture of submarine volcanoes.
- From Ash to Archive: Marine tephra studies, eruption chronologies, and the quantification of volcanic events through the marine record.
- Crossing the Shoreline: Bridging the gap between onshore and offshore observations. Joint inversions, geodesy, and tectonic-volcanic interactions.
- Frontiers at Sea: New sensors, seafloor instrumentation, and autonomous platforms (ROV/AUV) for real-time discovery and long-term monitoring.
- From Detection to Decision: From event detection to risk assessment and the challenges of communicating submarine volcanic hazards to stakeholders.
Registration Fees
- Senior Scientists: €350
- Early Career Scientists: €200*
- Virtual Attendance: €30
Fee includes: access to all sessions, coffee breaks & lunches, icebreaker, field trip, and the conference dinner.
