The course is organised jointly by the GEONORTE Institute (Faculty of Natural Sciences, National University of Salta), the Research Group on Volcanology, Geothermal Energy and Mineral Deposits (VOLGRYM) at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences of the NOA (CONICET–National University of Salta), and the Postgraduate School, Doctoral Programme in Geological Sciences at the National University of Salta. It is primarily aimed at postgraduate students undertaking their PhD, and successful completion of the course confers 80 credit hours towards their degree. The course will cover theoretical concepts and include fieldwork on selected outcrops and profiles.
This edition includes a tour of two key regions for understanding the region’s volcanism. Firstly, activities will take place in the Quebrada de Las Conchas, situated within the Cretaceous–Palaeogene rift system of north-western Argentina (NOA), an area of great interest due to its volcanic and sedimentary record. Subsequently, the course will continue in the San Antonio de los Cobres region, from where important volcanic structures in the Puna of Salta and Jujuy will be explored.
The course is sponsored by:
- Institute of Bio- and Geosciences of the NOA (IBIGEO)
- National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET)
- Latin American Volcanological Association (ALVO)
- International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI)
