The Olot (La Garrotxa) – La Palma International Course in Volcanology aims to provide comprehensive training in volcanology through a combination of theory, practical work and field trips. Over two intensive weeks, participants will acquire fundamental knowledge of magmatic and volcanic processes and current methods of study. THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT IN SPANISH LANGUAGE.
The course introduces the key concepts required for the correct identification and analysis of volcanic products and deposits, the mapping of stratigraphic sequences and the interpretation of eruptive processes. It will also provide basic knowledge of modelling volcanic processes, as well as the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in volcanology. Finally, the course will explore in depth aspects such as the monitoring of volcanically active areas, the understanding, assessment and mitigation of volcanic risk, crisis management, and the conservation of geological heritage.
Field trips to iconic locations such as the Garrotxa Volcanic Field and La Palma in the Canary Islands offer a unique opportunity to apply what has been learnt and to explore, under the guidance of expert lecturers, the main geosites and volcanic outcrops in both regions.
