“From Enigma to Understanding: A Multidisciplinary Journey into the Mechanics of Deadly Pyroclastic Density Currents”
Abstract: This presentation delves into the intricacies of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), some of nature’s most destructive and challenging phenomena. Despite their catastrophic potential, PDCs are less understood than volcanic plumes or lava flows, making them a significant focus in volcano research. In this talk, we summarize our wide-ranging investigation into the dynamics of PDCs, which includes field studies, small and large scale experimental work, and various numerical methods. A cornerstone of our study is the application of multiphase and granular mechanics, offering fresh insights into the behavior of these elusive phenomena. Our research findings provide valuable insights that may be critical in reducing the harm caused by these dangerous events.
