IAVCEI Global Challenges Working Group<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mission and Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The IAVCEI Global Challenges Working Group has been established in 2025 to identify, frame, and advance the role of volcanology in addressing pressing global challenges facing society. Recognizing the growing urgency of issues such as climate change, the energy transition, and resource sustainability, the Working Group aims to position the volcanological community as an active and collaborative contributor to solution-oriented science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mission of the Working Group is to mobilize the global volcanology community to engage proactively with major societal challenges by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Connecting volcanological expertise with global needs in sustainability and resource management<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific, engineering, policy, and societal domains<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Identifying priority challenges where volcanology can provide unique insights or leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Supporting evidence-based decision-making at local to global scales<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Through this mission, the Working Group seeks to strengthen the visibility, relevance, and impact of IAVCEI within the broader Earth science and policy landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Strategic Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To achieve its mission, the Working Group will pursue the following initial objectives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Mapping the Landscape<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Identify and review existing initiatives, programmes, and partnerships within IAVCEI, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), and related international frameworks. This includes assessing opportunities for alignment with external bodies such as national academies, international organizations, funding agencies, and global science initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Defining Priority Challenges<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Co-develop a set of priority global challenges through community consultation and horizon scanning. These will be refined through iterative input and synthesized in an IAVCEI Global Challenges White Paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Facilitating Collaboration and Dialogue<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Create platforms for interdisciplinary exchange, including workshops, joint sessions, and inter-association initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Developing a Clear Value Proposition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Articulate the contribution of volcanology to global challenges, including its relevance to policy, industry, and society. This includes identifying pathways to funding, partnerships, and shared infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. Strengthening Advocacy and Visibility<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              Promote the role of volcanology in global science-policy processes (e.g. climate assessments and sustainability missions), and advocate for increased recognition of volcanic systems in addressing global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Key Areas of Focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              Initial discussions have identified several interconnected challenge areas where volcanology can play a critical role:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • Energy transition and resources<\/strong>, including geothermal energy and critical minerals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Climate-volcano interactions<\/strong>, including volcanic impacts on climate and climate-driven changes in volcanic processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Adaptation and decision-support<\/strong>, informing resilient infrastructure and land-use planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Emerging technologies and infrastructure<\/strong>, including Earth observation systems and digital models of volcanic systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Societal dimensions<\/strong>, such as education, trust in science, and building and long-term sustainability of scientific capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Frontier topics<\/strong>, including geoengineering analogues, space exploration, and low-probability high-impact events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                These themes will evolve as the Working Group engages more broadly with the community and stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                The Working Group adopts a collaborative, open, and iterative approach. It will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • Start with a core group while actively expanding participation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Encourage leadership of individual challenge themes by dedicated coordinators<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Promote interdisciplinary engagement, even where this requires moving beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Focus on actionable outcomes, including workshops, reports, and funding proposals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Get Involved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                  Members of the community interested in contributing case studies or participating in Working Group activities are invited to get in touch. The Working Group welcomes engagement from across the volcanological community, as well as from partners in related disciplines and sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  The Working Group will actively engage with existing IAVCEI Commissions and Networks, as well as with International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) structures and external partners, to ensure complementarity, coordination, and maximum impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                  The Global Challenges Working Group represents a first step toward a more coordinated and outward-looking engagement of IAVCEI with global priorities.
